Dermaplaning is used to remove dead skin cells and hair from the face. Smooth and radiant skin can help improve your self-image and confidence, and we are here to help you achieve that.

An exfoliating blade is used to gently scrape off the outer layer of skin, mainly made up of dead skin cells and short, soft hairs (or “peach fuzz”). Dermaplaning leaves your skin feeling soft and refreshed.

Before we get started with any treatment, we will have a no-obligation consultation to pinpoint any issues and talk about your goals. This conversation will involve relevant medical and family history to ensure the treatment you are seeking is right for you.

We will then discuss your expected results and any associated risks with the procedure before moving forward.

Dermaplaning involves a small handheld blade that is gently skimmed on the skin to remove dead cells, scar tissue, and debris. The procedure is generally painless. Many patients report nothing more than a tingling sensation.

We’ll use the blade at a 45-degree angle to gently exfoliate the skin. The overall treatment should only take 20 to 30 minutes.

Following the procedure, we’ll apply a soothing cream to your skin to ease any discomfort. You can return to your daily activities following the treatment, but you may experience some redness for a few days.

Your skin will be sensitive to damage after treatment. Be sure to protect it from the sun with a broad-spectrum sunscreen.

What Do I Need to Know?

Does Dermaplaning Hurt?

Dermaplaning involves gently scraping the face to get rid of dead skin cells, fine hairs, and debris. Most patients say dermaplaning is virtually painless.

No. There are 2 types of hair on our bodies, vellus hair and terminal hair. Terminal hairs are the hairs found on our scalps, underarms, and pubic region. Vellus hairs are the fine hairs that grow on most parts of our bodies. They will grow back at the same rate and with the same texture.

Dermaplaning is considered to be a low-risk procedure. Common side effects include slight redness and whiteheads developing a few days after the treatment.

Rarely, infection and scarring can occur. We will discuss proper aftercare with you to minimize your risk of complications.

Virtually anyone can get dermaplaning done to rejuvenate their skin. The only thing that may affect your candidacy is an active breakout of acne. We’ll discuss your skin during your consultation. If you have a sudden breakout, we can reschedule your appointment.

Generally, dermaplaning is recommended every 3 to 4 weeks. 1 treatment will help rid your skin of around 3 weeks’ worth of dead skin cells.

Beyond ridding your skin of dead skin cells, debris, and bacteria, dermaplaning promotes cellular turnover and increases collagen and elastin fibres. Scraping away the outer layer of the skin also allows for better product absorption and effectiveness.

Dermaplaning Pre & Post-Care Instructions

We provide pre and post-care instructions for our patients when they are preparing for dermaplaning.

  • Do not use Accutane (acne medication) for at least 6 months before treatment.
  • Discontinue the use of any topical AHA’s (Retinol, vitamin A) for at least 3 to 5 days prior to your treatment.
  • Avoid the use of depilatories, waxing or any product or treatments that may irritate the skin for 1 to 2 weeks prior to your treatment.
  • Avoid sun exposure or the use of tanning beds at least 14 days prior to your treatment. Wear sunscreen with a minimum SPF30 at all times when outdoors. Please note sunburned skin cannot be treated.
  • Please ensure that you have not had any injectables, neurotoxins, or fillers for at least two weeks prior to treatment.
  • If you have a history of herpes or cold sores, you may require an anti-viral prescription prior to treatment.
  • Some medications or supplements may increase sensitivity. Consult your technician.
  • It is your responsibility to notify our office and/or your technician if there are any changes to your medical history or medications you are currently taking.
  • Your skin may have a slightly rosy glow for approximately 24 to 48 hours after treatment. You may also feel like you have a mild sunburn if your skin is extremely sensitive.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure for 1 to 2 days after your treatment. Use sunscreen daily that blocks both UVA and UVB rays, preferably one containing an SPF30 or higher. We recommend SkinCeuticals SPF 50 sunscreen.
  • Avoid any irritants such as products containing bleaching creams, Retin A, Retinol, glycolic/salicylic acids, or astringents for at least one week after your treatment.
  • Avoid submerging the area treated in a chlorinated pool or hot tub for the next 3 to 5 days.
  • Do not pick or pull any loosening or peeling skin. This could potentially cause scarring or hyperpigmentation.
  • You may or may not experience peeling and flaking of the outer, dead layer of skin within the first few days after your treatment—this is normal.
  • Acne may temporarily look worse after the first treatment but will improve after additional treatments.
  • Your technician will recommend post-treatment skin care products for you.
