What Should
I Expect?
The Conversation
Before we get started with any treatment, we will have a no-obligation consultation to pinpoint any issues and talk about your goals. This conversation will involve relevant medical and family history to ensure the treatment you are seeking is right for you.
We will then discuss your expected results and any associated risks with the procedure before moving forward.
The Process
Before the treatment, we’ll give you special glasses to protect your eyes from the laser. We also may shave the treatment area and apply a topical anesthetic.
We’ll then gently press a handheld laser to the skin, beaming light energy into the follicles. The Fotona Laser has a cold air cooling device to reduce any discomfort you may feel, protect your skin, and reduce the risk of side effects.
The laser will heat the hair in the hair follicles quickly and intensely, so you may feel a sensation like a pinprick. Most patients report minimal discomfort.
The procedure can take anywhere from a few minutes to over an hour, depending on the treatment area. We’ll discuss any specifics of your treatment with you during your consultation.
The Results
After the procedure, you may experience some redness and swelling on the treatment site. Your skin may feel sunburned for a few days. We might give you an ice pack to reduce any discomfort, but these immediate side effects should subside in a few hours.
For the following 6 weeks, avoid prolonged sun exposure and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily.
You’ll begin to shed hairs over the next few weeks – this will look like new hair growth. However, when hair does start to regrow, it will usually be finer and lighter in colour.
Hair grows in cycles, so you’ll need to repeat treatments to permanently reduce hair.
