About Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is a form of healing medicine used to enhance your body’s natural ability to heal tissue. This treatment is a concentrate of platelets collected from your blood by putting it through a centrifuge.

PRP therapy uses a concentration of your body’s platelets to accelerate collagen production, treat wrinkles, and improve skin’s overall appearance. We use PRP as an addition to microneedling, which involves using special needles to create thousands of micro channels in the skin and applying the PRP.

Who Could Benefit From PRP?

Microneedling with PRP is a suitable treatment if you’d like to reduce the appearance of certain marks or blemishes. Adding PRP to microneedling helps to speed up the healing process by stimulating skin renewal.

2 studies in 2016 and 2019 indicate that PRP microneedling can decrease the appearance of acne scars. PRP microneedling can also treat:

  • Surgical scars
  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Sun damage
  • Large pores
  • Uneven skin texture

I Expect?

The Conversation

Before we get started with any treatment, we will have a no-obligation consultation to pinpoint any issues and talk about your goals. This conversation will involve relevant medical and family history to ensure the treatment you are seeking is right for you.

We will then discuss your expected results and any associated risks with the procedure before moving forward.

We’ll start by cleansing your skin and numbing it with a topical anesthetic. The anesthetic will need around 30 minutes to take effect.

While your face is numbing, we’ll draw a vial of blood, usually from your arm, and transfer it into a WorldPRP tube. The tube then goes into a centrifuge, which separates a concentrated preparation from your blood’s other components.

We’ll then use an instrument called an InnoPen to create micro injuries in your skin. When we apply the PRP, these micro injuries act like channels for the PRP to sink into.

You’ll most likely have some redness and irritation immediately after the procedure. Most patients say they feel comfortable enough to continue with their day. Your provider will give you detailed care instructions during your initial appointment.

Depending on your treatment goals, you may need multiple appointments.

What Do I Need to Know?

What are the Benefits of PRP?

PRP helps some of your cells, particularly skin cells, regenerate and heal. We often use it to improve your skin’s natural tone and texture, or to increase hair growth.

Many patients see results within a few days of their initial treatment. As PRP microneedling can stimulate collagen production, results can continue to improve for the following 6 months.

It may take several months to significantly reduce the appearance of scars.

Typically, recovery from PRP microneedling is quick. You may experience some tenderness immediately following treatment. You may also have some mild swelling and bruising for the next 4-5 days.

Your healthcare provider will discuss side effects in detail with you during your consultation.

During your initial consultation, we’ll discuss any specific instructions on how to prepare for treatment.

Microneedling is a standalone treatment that doesn’t require the addition of PRP. However, using PRP can significantly improve healing time and the effectiveness of treatment.

Most healthy individuals are a suitable candidate for PRP microneedling. Typically, individuals with fine lines or wrinkles, acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, and other mild skin imperfections can benefit from PRP microneedling.

PRP microneedling is not recommended for those with severe skin conditions or blood-related conditions like anemia. However, we can steer you in the right direction during your consultation.

PRP Pre & Post-Care Instructions

PRP can be used to increase hair growth, and we want to help our patients prepare with comprehensive pre and post-care instructions.

Pre-Care
  • You may take Arnica 3-5 pellets, 3 times a day starting 2 days before the day of treatment and 2 days post—this will help to decrease the risk of bruising.
  • Be sure to hydrate well the day before and the day of your treatment.
  • Do not use Accutane (acne medication) during the 6 months before your treatment.
  • Avoid the following for at least 1 week prior to your procedure:
    • Ibuprofen, Motrin, Aleve, Naprosyn, Aspirin
    • Alcohol
    • Cigarettes
    • Systemic steroids (anti-inflammmatory), Prednisone, Dexamethasone
    • Nutritional supplements such as gingko, garlic, vitamin E, flax oil, curcumin, and any other anti-inflammatory supplements.
  • Avoid Retinol (vitamin A) and glycolic acids for at least 2 days before your treatment.

These drugs and herbs may cause excessive bleeding or bruising. Please notify us if you are taking any blood thinners such as Coumadin, Plavix or Heparin, or any others.

Shower the morning of your treatment and wash your hair thoroughly using your regular shampoo. Do not apply gels, hair sprays, or any other styling products. Hair colouring is fine up to 3 days before your procedure.

Please follow these instructions after your PRP treatment. There are few restrictions after your PRP treatment, allowing you to soon return to your daily activities.

Here are some things you can expect following treatment:

  • Mild inflammation, redness, swelling, itching, and/or soreness for 2 to 5 days. These are common to any injection procedure.
  • Continue to take 3 to 5 Arnica pellets 3 times a day until bruising clears.
  • If there are any tiny bumps, rest easy this will go away in a few hours after treatment.
  • Feeling firmness in the injection site for a few days post-treatment is normal and will soften over time.

To maximize your results—for a minimum of 5 hours post your PRP treatment, do NOT wash your scalp.

AVOID:

  • Touching, pressing, rubbing, or any form of manipulation to the treated area for at least 8 hours following treatment.
  • Advil, Aleve, Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Motrin, and Naprosyn 2 weeks post-treatment.
  • Nutritional supplements such as gingko, garlic, Vitamin E, Flax oil, curcumin and any other anti-inflammatory supplements 2 weeks after your treatment.
  • Alcohol, caffeine and smoking for 3 days after treatment.
  • High heat (sauna, steam room, very hot showers) for 24 hours post-treatment.
  • The sun and use a physical SPF daily.
  • Facials, facial massage, or laser treatments for 2 weeks afterwards. Most facial treatments can be done immediately prior to the PRP treatment but not for 2 weeks after.

Continue increased water intake the first week after your treatment. Most patients will see results within 2-4 weeks, and continued results will be seen for up to 12 weeks. We recommend a series of 3 to 6 treatments administered at 2 to 4-week intervals.
